DESCRIPTION
The Classic Bouncing Ball
Now that we’ve explored the theory, it’s time to get your hands dirty. The "Bouncing Ball" is the rite of passage for every animator. It may seem simple, but mastering this exercise proves you understand the most critical elements of the craft: gravity, weight, and volume.
The Objective:
Create a seamless animation of a standard rubber ball dropping from the top of the frame, bouncing three times, and coming to a natural rest.
Focus Areas:
The Arc: Ensure the ball follows a natural, curved path of action rather than a robotic straight line.
Squash & Stretch: Apply "squash" when the ball hits the ground to show impact, and "stretch" as it gains speed during the fall. Remember to maintain the ball's volume!
Timing & Spacing: Use "Slow In" and "Slow Out" at the peak of each bounce to mimic the effects of gravity.
Submission Requirements:
Format: A 24fps video file (MP4 or MOV).
Length: 3–5 seconds.
Sketch Layer: Please include your "timing marks" or arc paths on a separate, low-opacity layer so Alex can see your planning process.
Alex’s Pro Tip: "Don't rush the impact. The frame where the ball touches the ground is where the magic happens. Make us feel the weight!"
